CLASS CHANGES
Class schedules are developed based on student needs and class availability. With the exception of extraordinary circumstances, classes will not be changed after the second week of any semester and any change after the second week of any semester may result in the loss of credit. Beyond the first grading period, a Withdraw/Fail (WF) will be posted on the official record. Classes will not be changed because a student does not like a specific teacher. Should there be some issue or conflict, your counselor will be happy to set up a student/parent/teacher conference. Under no circumstance should a student cease attending a class until a change has been authorized.
CLASS RANK POLICY
In order to establish rank for seniors, GPA will be based on course grades for the first seven semesters with all classes in which grades are granted. Grade point averages will be calculated to the nearest hundredth decimal point.
CLASS STANDING – MOVING TO THE NEXT GRADE
Students are identified year to year by the number of credits they have earned toward graduation. A student must complete the minimum number of credits and be on track with required graduation subjects by the first day of the each school year in order to advance next level. In order to progress to the next level, students must have the following credits:
10th grade: 55 credits
11th grade: 110 credits
12th grade: 160 credits
ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE - CO/EXTRA-CURRICULAR
Maintaining acceptable grades not only will enable you to graduate, but will open the door to the many fun, interesting, and educational co/extra-curricular and athletic offerings here at Bassett High. You are encouraged to become involved in the co/extra-curricular and athletic options. However, academics are our first priority. In order to participate in athletic and/or co/extra-curricular programs (sports teams, band, choir, drama, ASB, etc.) students must:
1. Maintain academic eligibility. Must be passing four classes and maintain a 2.0 GPA*.
2. Attend four or more classes on the day of an event in order to participate. If absent, only a doctor’s note or administrative waiver can allow the student to participate.
3. Purchase an ASB card, since all awards, letters, and certificates are paid through ASB funds. Students who do not have a card may participate, but will not be eligible to receive any awards.
*There are many opportunities for assistance for students needing extra help. After-school tutoring is available through many individual teachers and departments. Please take advantage of the assistance offered to keep your grades up.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) CALCULATION
Bassett High School is on a 4.0 grading scale. A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. Classes designated as “Honors” or “Advanced Placement” are offered and can be taken in 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade. These courses are weighed and awarded quality points for GPA calculation.
PLAGIARISM - CHEATING
Plagiarism is the deliberate act of stealing another’s words, ideas, research and passing it off as one’s own. It is the responsibility of each student to do his own work whether the assignment is an essay, examination, or research paper. Plagiarism is the use of part or all of another’s personal work without proper acknowledgment. If a student uses another’s words verbatim (word-for-word), quotation marks must be placed around the borrowed passage. The student must also acknowledge the source even if the passage is paraphrased (re-written in the student’s words). Using another’s ideas or research data without proper acknowledgment is also considered plagiarism. Each instructor has a policy on plagiarism; most will assign a grade of F (zero) to any assignment they consider plagiarized.
REPORT CARDS
Progress Reports are issued and mailed home five weeks into each quarter. Reports Cards are issued and mailed home at the end of every 10-week grading period. Credits are earned at the end of each semester.

BUS TRANSPORTATION
RIDING ON THE BUS TO AND FROM SCHOOL IS A PRIVILEGE. POOR BEHAVIOR ON THE BUS, OR AT THE BUS STOP, WILL RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY ACTION, WHICH MAY INCLUDE SUSPENSION OF BUS RIDING PRIVILEGES.
CLOSED CAMPUS
Bassett High School is a closed campus. Once a student arrives at school, he/she must remain on campus unless issued an office-approved permit to leave campus. If a student is found off-campus without permission the student will be marked truant and will be given a citation by the Sheriff to appear in court.
HEALTH OFFICE
The Health Office is located in the Activities Office. To see the health clerk during class time, a student must obtain a pass from the teacher and sign in at the Health Office counter. If the Health Office is closed, the student must report to the Attendance Office, where the secretary may have the student return to class or phone home for permission to leave school. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT EMERGENCY NUMBERS ARE UP TO DATE AND CORRECT.

Students are not to stay on campus after school unless involved in sports, school activities, tutoring, detention, or community service.
MAGIC MARKERS, WHITE OUT PENS, ETCHING TOOLS, SPRAY, PAINT, ETC.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DRESS REQUIREMENT
Students enrolled in Physical Education classes must wear a BHS PE shirt and black shorts or sweats (no cut-off sweats). PE shirt must be worn in its original condition; no alterations, no graffiti of any kind. Sweats cannot be worn over street clothes. Tennis shoes worn with white socks are required during all activities. Shoe laces must be tied outside the shoe tongue. Students not dressed for PE will not participate in any activity and will lose 10 points for the period.
SCOOTERS, SKATEBOARDS, ROLLERBLADES/SKATES, BICYCLES
Scooters, skateboards and roller blades are not to be brought on campus at any time. They may be taken by Administration and held for parents to pick up. Bicycles should be properly locked and not ridden on campus.
SEARCHES AND USE OF TRAINED DOGS
School administrators may conduct random searches in a classroom at anytime. PE lockers and personal items such as backpacks, purses, and cars are subject to search by a school administrator who has reasonable grounds or suspicion. In an effort to keep school free of drugs and firearms, the district uses specially trained non-aggressive dogs to sniff out and alert staff to the presence of substances prohibited by law or district policy. The dogs may sniff the air around lockers, desks, bags, items or vehicles on district property or at district sponsored events. (Ed. Code 35160.1, 35294.5, 49050 – 49051, 49320 – 49334, P.C. 626 & 10).
SEXUAL HARRASSMENT
The sexual harassment of any student by any other student or any District employee shall not be tolerated. Sexual harassment is a suspendable offense. Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and verbal, visual or physical conduct of a sexual nature when this conduct meets specific criteria. The conduct must be considered by a reasonable person to be sufficiently severe or pervasive to have a negative impact upon the student’s academic performance or to create an intimidating, hostile or offensive academic environment. Any student or employee who is found guilty of sexual harassment shall be subject to disciplinary action. Students and/or staff are required to report immediately incidents of sexual harassment to the administration. (Ed. Code 212.6, 230, 48980, 48900.2 and Board Policy)
SMOKING/TOBACCO PRODUCTS
The possession or use of tobacco, products, matches, lighters, etc. are not allowed. Violation will be subject to disciplinary action. (Ed. Code 48900)
STUDENT BODY CARD
For identification purposes, each student is issued a Student I.D. Card which must be carried at all times and utilized for the following reasons: campus safety, admission to school events, technology access, lunch pass, library and textbook check-out. Students are reminded that without a Student I.D. Card they will not be admitted to school events that occur after regular operating hours. Students may be asked to show their card to a staff member. Failure to comply is defiance and disciplinary action will be taken. Lost cards should be replaced immediately for a small fee through the Activities Office.
STUDENT EMERGENCY INFORMATION
As a condition of enrollment each student must have a current, accurate and signed emergency card on file. Detention will be issued to students who fail to return the emergency card. Please note that listing someone to be contacted in case of an emergency or disaster does not extend authority to excuse absences or check students out of school. Please contact the Attendance Office immediately if there is a change of address, home or work phone numbers, email, and emergency contact person(s).
TECHNOLOGY
BHS has integrating computer technology into many aspects of the school program and offers access to computers and the Internet in every classroom. Student use of the networked computers at BHS is governed by the BUSD “Student Acceptable Use Policy” and the school’s “Policies and Procedures for Student Computer Use” which are distributed at one time when the student enters the District. The form is included in the registration packet when the student first enters school. The policy is effective unless revoked by administration or parents. Students are expected to be familiar with these policies and understand that failure to comply will result in one or more of the consequences outlined in the documents.
In order to use the school computers, students must have signed copies of the BHS “Parent/Student Agreement on Computer Use” and the BUSD “Agreement to Student Acceptable Use Policy and Parental Permission for Use of the Network” on file with the school. When using computers, students must display their student body ID cards to verify that these agreements are on file. Students who fail to abide by the student use contract will lose their Internet use.
VISITORS
Bassett High School is closed campus to all but enrolled students, staff, and approved visitors. To be an approved visitor, a parent, guardian, or invited guest should check in at front gate and pick up a visitor pass at the time of the visit. Students may not bring relatives or friends to school as visitors. This includes small children and babies.
WITHDRAWAL FROM SCHOOL
A withdrawal from school is only granted with parent/guardian notification through the Guidance Office. A check out sheet with instructions is then given to the student to present to each of his/her teachers during the normal course of the student’s last day. The checkout is to be returned to the Guidance Office for final clearance and issuance of an unofficial school transcript and a copy of their immunization records. Before the check out slip is issued or records can be forwarded to the new school, all textbooks must be returned and all fees paid.
ATTENDANCE
Students who are rarely absent and are not tardy earn better grades and are more likely to meet all requirements for graduation. Therefore, the attendance policy is designed to support the goals of regular and punctual attendance. It is the responsibility of the school and parents alike to support and enforce the State attendance laws. Students who have excessive absences and/or tardies will be subject to various interventions and consequences, including possible referral to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) where parents/guardians may receive a monetary fine, and students may lose their driving privilege. Students may also be removed from Bassett High School and placed into an alternative program.
EARLY SIGN-OUT FOR APPOINTMENTS
In order for an absence to be excused when a student must leave school early, two requirements must be met:
1. The parent or guardian must come to or call the Attendance Office prior to the student’s departure. (A person listed on the student’s emergency card does not provide authorization to check student’s in/out of school.)
2. The student must come to the Attendance Office to “sign-out” prior to departure and receive a pass to leave campus.
Failure to follow procedures may result in a truancy from class and a referral for two-hour detention.
ILLNESS AT SCHOOL
If a student becomes ill at school, he/she must report to the health office. If the health clerk determines the student should be sent home, the parent/guardian will be notified. A student may not be released unless a parent/guardian has been notified.
REPORTING/CLEARING ABSENCES
Parents or guardians must notify the school regarding all absences whether excused or unexcused. Student absences must be cleared within two (2) days of returning to school and may ONLY be cleared by a telephone call or written excuse made by the parent or guardian. Excused Absences are defined as follows: Verified doctor or dental appointments; injury or illness verified by doctor or school nurse; school activity; religious holiday; death in the immediate family; court appointment. (All other absences are considered unexcused.) Make-up work resulting from an excused absence must be completed within a reasonable period of time commensurate with the length of the absence. Students are reminded that any absence has a negative impact on learning and state funding for the school.
Whenever possible, please call prior to the absence. To report absences, parents/guardians may call (626) 931-2817 or (626) 931-2818 24 hours a day, 7 days week. If the office is not open, the information may be left on the attendance recorder.
-Identify yourself
-Give the date of the absence
-Spell the students last name
-Give the first name of the student
-Give reason for absence
PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCES
If it is necessary for you to be absent for five or more days (trips, medical surgery, college visits, or other anticipated absences) please contact the attendance office before the absence.
TRUANCY POLICY
Students are expected to attend every class unless excused (see previous page).
Interventions/consequences for truancy will be as follows:
1. 1st Truancy: Teacher warning with consequences.
2. 2nd Truancy: Minimum 15-minute detention with teacher or staff member within department.
3. 3rd Truancy: Parent/Teacher conference with counselor.
4. 4th Truancy: Referral to counselor; Citation from L.A. County Sheriff
5. 5th Truancy: Administrative Referral. Possible referral to School Attendance Review Board
* The purpose of the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) is to divert students with school attendance or school behavior problems from the Juvenile Justice System by providing guidance and coordinated community services to meet their special needs. SARB attempts to help the student and the parent/guardian to solve problems by using community resources. If SARB is unable to solve the problem at their level, the student and the parent/guardian will be issued a citation and will be required to appear in court. (Ed. Code 48263)
TARDY POLICY
Bassett High School’s vision is to provide all students with the opportunity to learn. Requiring students to be in class on time is paramount to fulfilling the vision. Students are EXPECTED to arrive to class before the bell sounds. Students arriving after the bell sounds are tardy and are subject to the following consequences:
Tardy Number:
1- Teacher warning with consequences.
2- Teacher warning with consequences.
3- Minimum 15-minute detention with teacher or staff member.
4- Parent/teacher conference with counselor.
5- Referral to counselor.
6- Administrative referral for disciplinary action.
-An excused tardy is only for a student who returns late to class after a medical appointment with a medical form slip. If a student is late to school and the tardy is not related to a medical reason, he/she is to report directly to class.
DISCIPLINE
The prevailing philosophy at Bassett High School is that students who conduct themselves according to rules of courtesy and common sense need few stated rules to guide their conduct. It is the responsibility of all staff at Bassett High School to help students develop acceptable behavior patterns by creating a social climate within the school, which is conducive to proper individual and group behavior. The school views the teaching of discipline as an essential part of the educational goal of the school.
Every student is entitled to courtesy and consideration in relationships with fellow students and with all school personnel. Students will earn this courtesy and consideration by extending the same respect to every person they encounter at Bassett High School. School facilities are available for use by all students and everyone is expected to maintain these facilities in a manner, which demonstrates pride in their school. Actions that injure other people, damage private or public property, impede or obstruct the learning process and/or the operation of the school will not be tolerated.

Students who fail to serve their assignment will receive further disciplinary action.
